The Story of My Life: Helen Keller

1. I really enjoyed reading this narrative. You get a deeper look into Helen's thoughts and you can feel the emotion that Helen was feeling.

2. The most interesting part of this narrative was how Miss. Sullivan was teaching Helen. It was very creative of her to start signing the words into Helen's hand.

3. The thing that surprised me the most was how Helen can have such vivid memories of her childhood and remember them with such detail.

4. This narrative did not really change my views on Helen. I still look at her as a very strong woman who can over come any obstacle thrown in her way.

5.  When I finally succeeded in making the letters correctly I was flushed with childish pleasure and pride. Running downstairs to my mother I held up my hand and made the letters for doll. I did not know that I was spelling a word or even that words existed; I was simply making my fingers go in monkey-like imitation.

Have you ever been at sea in a dense fog, when it seemed as if a tangible white darkness shut you in, and the great ship, tense and anxious, groped her way toward the shore with plummet and sounding-line, and you waited with beating heart for something to happen? I was like that ship before my education began, only I was without compass or sounding-line, and had no way of knowing how near the harbour was.

The afternoon sun penetrated the mass of honeysuckle that covered the porch, and fell on my upturned face. My fingers lingered almost unconsciously on the familiar leaves and blossoms which had just come forth to greet the sweet southern spring.

6. A narrative is more engaging than a biography because you get a lot of detail from the personal experiences, and you feel like the person is sitting across from you and telling you the story. Personal narrative's are more relaxed than a biography which are very business like and you don't get all of the little details as you get from the personal narratives.

7. What can I write my personal narrative about:
  • First day of dance class
  • First time I tried out for the school softball team
  • First trip to Florida/ Disney
  • First day of High School
  • Having surgery in 4th grade
