Editing Questions: Narrative

Alli Bates:

1. Alli had very good dialogue, and very descriptive words. The way she describes the cold wind and her nine year old hips really paint a picture in my head of what the weather was like and what she looked like. I also really enjoy how she desriptively describes they way the people dressed, talked and acted. It helps with the setting, and plot of the story.

2. I was a bit confused in the beginning and it was hard to keep reading it. The beginning needs to be a little bit more "catchy". I think it would be beneficial for her to add a phrase or statement in the beginning to help grab the readers attention. Like "Out of all the rules my mother gave me, I would have never guessed I would disobey the biggest one of all, the "Stranger, Danger" rule."

3. My favorite literary device that Alli used is, the descriptive words. instead of just saying i went out to play with my hula-hoop she talks about "the hula-hoop spinning around her nine year old hips." and I also really enjoyed how she describes the cold winter winds.

4. The most catchy part of this narrative would be the title. It is also catchy how she goes right into the story and starts it off with dialogue of the older lady.

The Story of My Life: Helen Keller

1. I really enjoyed reading this narrative. You get a deeper look into Helen's thoughts and you can feel the emotion that Helen was feeling.

2. The most interesting part of this narrative was how Miss. Sullivan was teaching Helen. It was very creative of her to start signing the words into Helen's hand.

3. The thing that surprised me the most was how Helen can have such vivid memories of her childhood and remember them with such detail.

4. This narrative did not really change my views on Helen. I still look at her as a very strong woman who can over come any obstacle thrown in her way.

5.  When I finally succeeded in making the letters correctly I was flushed with childish pleasure and pride. Running downstairs to my mother I held up my hand and made the letters for doll. I did not know that I was spelling a word or even that words existed; I was simply making my fingers go in monkey-like imitation.

Have you ever been at sea in a dense fog, when it seemed as if a tangible white darkness shut you in, and the great ship, tense and anxious, groped her way toward the shore with plummet and sounding-line, and you waited with beating heart for something to happen? I was like that ship before my education began, only I was without compass or sounding-line, and had no way of knowing how near the harbour was.

The afternoon sun penetrated the mass of honeysuckle that covered the porch, and fell on my upturned face. My fingers lingered almost unconsciously on the familiar leaves and blossoms which had just come forth to greet the sweet southern spring.

6. A narrative is more engaging than a biography because you get a lot of detail from the personal experiences, and you feel like the person is sitting across from you and telling you the story. Personal narrative's are more relaxed than a biography which are very business like and you don't get all of the little details as you get from the personal narratives.

7. What can I write my personal narrative about:
  • First day of dance class
  • First time I tried out for the school softball team
  • First trip to Florida/ Disney
  • First day of High School
  • Having surgery in 4th grade

Survey

1. I love English class!  I really enjoy writting.

2. I enjoy writting notes to friends, and letters.

3. I love reading poetry, notes from friends, letters, and magazines.

4. The only writting assignments that I don't like are the essay's I have to write that I have no passion for.  If it is not a topic I feel strongly for, I have a really hard time writing them. I also really don't like research papers.

5. D

6. I enjoy classroom discussions if I am passionate about the topic. Like in answer 4, if I am not passionate about the topic then I have a harder time writing or discussing about it. I enjoy hearing other peoples oppinions and also getting my point said.

7. How I participate in a classroom discussion depends once again on how passionate I am about the topic. If I am really passionate about the topic then I am a leader or I contribute alot. Yet if it is something I am not so passionate about then I dont really take much participation in the conversation.

8. Outside of school I am a very busy person. I work at Five Below, I play softball  for the school, and I also have to make sure my younger sister is taken care of.

9. This weekend started off with me working and that was a ton of fun. I love my job and the people I work with. On friday I went to both the girls and guys basketball games.  I watched my sister play in the JV game at home and then travled over to Kilbourne to watch the boy's Varsity game. After the game I met up with my family at Cane's and then had a sleepover with a friend. Saturday was pretty boring I was called off work so I stayed home all day. Saturday night I picked up a different friend went up to Centerburge to visit with my grandparets. My friend stayed the night. On sunday I went to church and played a softball game, and sunday night I spent the night at a different friends house. Monday I worked all day long.  I had a fun but as you can see very long weekend.

10. There is nothing really you need to know except that I am very shy, and I don't liked to be called out in front of the class I hate public speaking unless I want to do it.

11. I dont have any questions so far!
